It’s raining outside, typical Vancouver weather they say. It’s hard to imagine that just a few days ago Gleyse and I where in Maui, Hawaii. For 5 days we were visiting one of the most beautiful islands of the newest of the 50 U.S. states
With Alaska airlines we flew to Maui in about 8 hours. It’s actually quite far away. The time difference with Vancouver is 3 hours. The difference with The Netherlands is 12 hours, so it’s literally on the other side of the planet. Never the less I still met a few Dutch people. One of them was easy to recognize in his Ajax jersey. The other group actually lived in Canada, stranger, only a few minutes from our apartment in Burnaby.
On arrival we picked up our rental car and after a last moment upgrade we drove away in a nice Ford Mustang convertible! The perfect start of our trip.
The weather was great, nice and sunny and about 30 degrees Celsius every day. Because we had a car for the full duration of our trip we were able to see quite a bit of the Island.
We drove all the way up to the highest volcano of the Island, Haleakala. The view from this 3km high giant is awesome and it really looks like you’re walking on the moon.
We also drove on the famous ‘road to Hana’ . A beautiful highway along the coast of north eastern Maui. This part of the island is completely covered with rain forests. We made lots of stops, and visited the twin falls.
Snorkeling and Turtles
Without a doubt the best part of the trip was the snorkeling tour to Molokini and turtle town. Although we had to get up quite early but the rewards was great. It’s really quite an experience to be snorkeling in the ocean surrounded by 6 giant Hawaiian sea turtles.
A special thanks
I guess it’s only fair to thank my former employer SARA, to make this trip possible. The flight was booked with the KLM / AirFrance air-miles I collected while traveling for my previous job. In just 2 years I’d collected quite some air-miles, enough for two round trip tickets to Hawaii in this case.
I had never spent these miles as I preferred to keep them as a backup just in case I had to fly back to the Netherlands unexpectedly. Now, because they were expiring, it was time to use them for something fun!
Our trip to Hawaii was beautiful and relaxing and I would definitely recommend Maui as a holiday destination. I went to Waikiki, Honolulu two years ago and comparing these two, Maui definitely has a lot more Hawaiian spirit than for example Honolulu.
